When Clarity Crosses a Line

Clarity is one of my greatest gifts. It’s also one of my greatest risks.

Recently, I learned the hard way what happens when I let it spill over without permission.

The Misstep

I spoke matter-of-factly in a moment that wasn’t mine to speak into. My intent was good, but the way it landed wasn’t. What I thought was support came across as intrusion. Instead of connection, I caused a recoil.

Even without words, the silence was its own answer.

The Shadow Side of Strengths

Every strength has a shadow:

  • Clarity offered without invitation can feel like intrusion.

  • Truth spoken without gentleness can feel like force.

  • Vision shared without context can feel like dismissal.

Gifts, if used without care, can turn into weapons.

What I’m Practicing

I don’t want to retreat into guilt or self-doubt. Instead, I’m treating the moment as a teacher. Here’s the work I’m leaning into:

  • Pausing before I speak.

  • Asking for permission, not assuming it.

  • Respecting timing and pace.

  • Softening the delivery.

  • Honoring the lived experience others bring.

Leadership isn’t about never messing up—it’s about what you do after you do.

Closing Reflection

I share this not because it’s polished, but because it was messy. Because leadership is a practice, not a performance.

Next time, I’ll pause. I’ll breathe. I’ll ask. Because sometimes the most powerful form of clarity is silence.
